Lost or found an animal?

Unofficial community directory. Sources checked July 27, 2026; call agencies to confirm current intake and hours.

Start local, then widen the circle. Summer visitors sometimes carry found animals into another county before anyone knows where to look, so check both where the animal disappeared and where a finder may have traveled.

I lost an animal

Work outward from the last-seen point.

  1. Post to WMAW with a clear photo, last-seen place and time, and a safe way to contact you.
  2. Call Fremont Humane at (719) 275-0663; it holds Custer County’s animal-service contracts.
  3. Check the neighboring-county list below, especially along the direction of travel.
  4. Contact your microchip company and local veterinary offices. Mark the chip record lost.
  5. Watch for scams. Never send verification codes, gift cards, deposits, or money to someone claiming they found your animal.

I found an animal

Record the place before you move.

  1. Photograph the animal and note the exact found location and time for the owner and receiving agency.
  2. Check WMAW’s group for a matching lost post.
  3. Inside Westcliffe, ask the town about its short-term hold. Elsewhere in Custer County, call Fremont Humane before transporting.
  4. Ask a shelter or veterinary clinic to scan for a microchip.
  5. If you must travel with the animal, tell both the found-area network and the shelter in the county where you take it.

Wet Mountain Animal Welfare

Covers: Westcliffe and the Wet Mountain Valley

The valley’s established lost-and-found partner. Their open Facebook group is the fastest local community network; they also provide fostering, microchipping, food, spay/neuter support, and other animal-welfare help.

Humane Society of Fremont County

Covers: Custer County, Westcliffe, Silver Cliff, and Fremont County animal-service contracts

This is the receiving shelter for Custer County. Animals found outside Westcliffe town limits generally go to Cañon City. Call before driving to confirm intake and current hours.

Custer County Sheriff

Covers: Unincorporated Custer County and local public-safety routing

Call for a roaming animal creating a safety concern, for county routing, or when you do not know which agency has jurisdiction. For immediate danger on a roadway, call 911.

  • Fremont Humane’s current stray-hold period.
  • The exact length of Westcliffe’s short-term hold.

  • The correct current Brand Inspector contact/process for stray livestock.

For horses, cattle, or other livestock, call the Custer County Sheriff for current routing. Do not assume the pet-shelter process applies.
